--ZBC News--
Today is the first day of the Galactic Games. Almost the entire galaxy are excited to see what this year's games will bring, and how well their favorite athletes will do.
Our own athletes have trained all year to be in top form for the games. Many of us are hoping for Henry Castan to get a good position in skydiving, but here of all sports the owls are sure to provide strong competition.
Stay tuned to ZBC 1 to follow the event that we all have been waiting for.

And now, Gary with the weather.

Several Strigiforme ships have been reported to be unfergoing retrofits, which one dockworker described as "highly unorthodox and strange."

Said dockworker was quickly arrested by Strigiforme MPs.

-Novus-

The first day of the Galactic Games has begun on Cuuyth. Our analysts tell me that the Zuguthian team is in a good position for the sharpshooting contest, and the Strigiforme are sure to provide stiff competition to the skydivers, but hopefully Novus can scrape a medal out of swimming. With no events yet complete, it is likely too early to judge.

-Over Cuuyth-

The destroyer Repulse sat over Cuuyth, her commander felling as thouh he had eyes on him at all times. To ease his nerves, he launched a shuttle; bound for Novus, carrying a report, as well as a complimentary bottle of Strifigorme liquor. As the small scraft made its run-up to FTL, it vanished in an explosion, throwing debris in all directions.

Just over NeoRome, a small vortex opened and disgorged a large canister, glowing along the edges. Within seconds a large ship attached to it and carried it off. This ship approached a much larger ship, a battlecruiser, named the Parallax. The smaller ship attached the canister to a dock on the Parallax, which retracted into the ship. The ship shifted slightly and the dock vanished, along with the container.

Aboard the bridge, Jahgrin watched and directed the charging of the ship's FTL drive. A lieutenant came up behind him and stood at attention. "Sir!"

"Go on Lieutenant," Jahgrin said.

"The package is loaded and the holding cells have been reinforced as requested."

"Excellent. Signal the third fleet and put them on standby to meet us at the designated rendezvous point."

"Yes sir!" The Lieutenant ran off, and Jahgrin checked the progress of the FTL drive. Completed. He then did a sweep of the weapons and shields. Only one fusion coil splicer, though it was Positronic, and everything else was shields. It was a configuration that rivaled the power of Strigiforme shields, and with the power levels of the Singularity, it would recharge extremely quickly. Nearly 100 separate, re-arranging layers of plasma and kinetic barriers. And the power levels were extremely vast. All communication would be cut off when the layers were activated; previous communication would be necessary.

Jahgrin pressed a button and the ship flashed and vanished into thin air, the space behind it wavering. FTL.

=Singularity Installation=

Though it had fired an hour ago, the installation was still unstable. Power continually arced between the spinning rings and the barrel was still charged. It was not designed to fire twice in such a short period. And so the installation entered an emergency mode, the bridges extended and a laser disgorged from the barrel. The rings were caught and screeched to a halt. The laser kept up until vanishing. And now the barrel discharged. Power still arced, but it no longer accompanied the rings. It would not be able to fire again without destroying itself.

-Message to: Strigiforme-

Head of Security Council L. Jahgrin is enroute in the heavily shielded Parallax to pick up the Imperator. Afterwards, Jahgrin will watch the games as they occur.

Please note: Due to security reasons, we cannot allow any shuttles in or out of the Parallax. It must either dock with another ship to retrieve the Imperator or land on Cuuyth and retrieve him from an armed escort. In addition, we cannot allow Jahgrin to be ferried to the planet via an unarmed vessel for security reasons. We realize that this is in contrary to your recent security practices, but the recent war against NeoRome, coupled with the crippled command structure of our government, makes shuttle transport an unacceptable risk for council members.

All ships are to dock with Anchor Yylv in orbit around Cuuyth's moon. The Imperator will be taken there.

Also error, the games aren't at Cuuyth. They're at some unimportant world that the name doesn't matter. What does matter is the Strigiforme is hosting them

Nothing of importance continues from Hexalan, business as usual, except for the fleets still off with the NeoRomans. However, in the non-imperial world, the first in a line of luxury space cruise liners was completed. Made from modified designs of the Ethereal Nightmare-Class, the 1.6km ships are totally unarmed and would rely on local protection. The first voyage will be within the week, tickets going for thousands of credits with E-deck already becoming fully booked. Its route will take it to various other nations (GSA/GSI exclusive), there picking up and dropping off passengers who have ordered such. The new, Shining Opalescence-Class was designed in part by Sinoviet Shipyards, the governments contracted builders, but were contacted by the private tour business, Spatial Gradients, and are responsible for operation and maintenance, Sinoviet and Hexalan providing for their construction.

--Article: "Opportunities or Liabilities? 23rd Directorate uncertain of expansionary proposals."
-Author: Ivara Nesquet

Picture ocean waters - blue, pristine. As you sit on one of its shores, you can't help but wonder what lies on the other side. Yet you cannot do anything more to sate your curiosity, for the tides are high and the winds strong...your frame cannot overcome such obstacles. And what do you do when you arrive at this conclusion? Do you banish the thought from your mind? Or do you continue to yearn for that which is outside your grasp? And what, then? Ponder more? Wait, perhaps?

It's been thirty years since the borders of the Protectorate were closed down. An intangible yet impenetrable wall has served to cut off our space from the rest of the galaxy at large for the past three decades, not by force, mind you, but by choice. A choice of self-sufficiency over economic interdependence. As I'm sure some of you can attest, it's not a decision that resulted in immediate prosperity. The first few years of what many have taken to calling the "Taln First" policy were rocky at best; disastrous at worst. But as Tiens, we persevered through the sporadic poverty, soldiered through the various embarrassing revolts. And here we are today, reliant on none but ourselves.

Though now we nest on what could spell the end of this spectacular era. The Directorate voted to send an envoy, but sources that wish to remain anonymous assert that as of the time of this writing, no word has been received back. This in direct violation of the protocols instilled in a Tien consular, and certainly an act one chosen to enact this monumental task would avoid at all costs. While we can only speculate, one thing is certain - something or someone, perhaps even the 'allies' we thought to contact, has prevented the ship from completing its mission. This is unacceptable, but we as a species must not resort to that which launched our ancestors into a millennial war centuries ago so quickly. The Directorate appears to have acted in recognition of this absolute truth, and has voted against sending a follow-up.

What does that mean for us? What does it mean for the hundreds of businesses eagerly looking beyond our own nearly depleted worlds to economic opportunities abroad? The answer is, everything. An inside leak has recently revealed an extraordinary proposal to be brought before the Directorate when they convene next, one that presents a solution no Tien has thought of for decades. Expansion. Not merely cataloging Protectorate worlds, no, but building our affluence and bringing more solar systems into the fold. A fold protected by a state-of-the-art military. A fold whose interests are furthered by the finest soldiers on this side of the universe. Yes, this proposal encompasses not just expansion, but aggressive expansion...and it just might work. With over 20% of the budget allocated to the standing fleet, it's hard to find quarrel with the notion we could do with more space to protect. And it's rather hard to argue with a Tien fleet should that space happen to be occupied, at any rate.

Let us just hope that the Directorate takes this, as with all things, in moderation.

The Protectorate stands forever.

- I. Nesquet

On the Taln border, a small scout craft appeared from FTL. Scanning space, it located a warning bouy. Opening communications, the scout transmitted:

//
Greetings. This is the Novan Commonwealth vessel Belfast to any recieving Taln vessel or station. Our government wishes to open communications with yours. Please respond negative or positive to this vessel.

-NeoRoman Sensor Station Galactus-

Several alarms began going off as the sensor station registered an energy spike in nearly all detection frequencies. First Officer Sandrian rushed down the the corridor to the main observation bridge, data-pad in hand, pushing past confused maintenance teams working on the wiring and vigilant security teams. She skidded to a halt in front of the blast door and waited as it quickly scanned her before opening. She then dashed into the bridge and stopped just in front of the commander. "The report I asked for?" The commander asked.

"The massive energy spike is weapons fire coupled with an extensive FTL disruption field," Sandrian replied, slightly out of breath. "That's how we detected it."

"FTL Disruption? Who disrupts FTL travel anymore? It's too easy to circumvent."

"We don't know. But whoever did this had knowledge in advance."

"Where is it?"

"We're pinpointing it's location now." The commander turned to the massive holo-projector behind him.

"Bring up the subspace map," he ordered the computer. A few seconds and a large 3D grid came onscreen, showing subspace fluctuations coming in from FTL drive systems. From here, they could monitor most, if not all, FTL travel, but most of it is inconclusive. Towards main sector space there were wells and blips, showing the ever-present travel of the other empires. In the opposite direction, there were large fluctuations coming from all over the place, sensor interference. The commander moved back a bit and widened his eyes, startled, and looked for a pattern. "Narrow the aperture and focus on sector B-981," he stated. A few seconds passed. The traffic from the main sector vanished and only a small section of the map was shown. There were still large blips all over, but now a pattern formed. "Sector B-992." The map narrowed and a clear, but still shifting, blob formed. A large FTL activity map. "Analyze that field."

"Yes sir!" Sandrian ran out of the bridge to the main sensor room. The commander looked at the map for a second. "What's between us and that FTL distortion field?" he asked the computer. After a second, another map opened beside the FTL map, and showed a sector map. Not far past the field was Ohijan, the ARK. And the fleet sent there hadn't reported back.

And far beyond that was Taln space, an area not visited or seen by any nation for 30 years.

Shuttles rocketed to from the surface, the orbital elevator ferrying up another load of passengers. They all converged at HSODS-C11-J, the largest station at the planet. The drydock has been temporarily disconnected so as to mount the massive ship. At C11-J, known locally as Borealis, hundreds of people boarded. While nearly all aboard, the scheduled time for departure was in just over 20 minutes. It would be then the Songful Heartwriter would leave for Novan space.

Elsewhere, fighters rescinded to the Heavy Support Carrier, Engelic. The escorts began to form up, preparing for their own departure.

An accident occurred today at Polaaris Shipyards. While details are mostly unknown, apparently the full of a prototype cruiser suffered massve damage from a system malfunction.

Addittionally, several frigates have been dispatched to Repulse's location.

With help from Novan hospital ships, the disease that has been attacking Zuguthian colonies has now been successfully terminated, and a vaccine has been created. There were no confirmed deaths among the infected.
The Empress sends her personal thanks to the crew of the hospital ships, as well as to the Novan government itself.
Research will be focused on preventing another outbreak, and the more sensitive of the former infected will be temporarily moved to hospitals on Zuguth.

The Novans would like to offer the services of the hospital ship Heartsmith to the Zuguthians, as it is equipped for medical research. It may be useful in finding a preventative medicine.
