Saveties would be kinda pointless, as you pretty much need to know relative to what it would be.
And when the reference point would change, your speed may actually be above the limit in that instance, sooo.... yeah.
I'm actually gonna swap max speed with accelleration in the ship-template now.

Max velocity is always "almost light speed". We're in space. If you artifically limit your speed, you're wasting fuel.

"Combat velocity" and "cruising velocity" I could see, in km/s or percentages of c.

Still, those velocities would be quite dependent on your orbital situation...
However, I have yet another suggestion:
Seperate max velocity into
a) max acceleration
and
b) max atmospheric speed

If I can go one further?

Acceleration, Atmospheric max velocity (if applicable), max FTL velocity, combat speed, cruising speed.

In m/s^2, m/s, c, km/s, and m/s or km/s respectively.

There are a few people on the forums, including me, that can make simple sketches as long as there is something to start, so it shouldn't be a problem. I wouldn't expect for every single ship to be entered with an image, though. As long as people don't start spamming dozens of classes, it's the information that's the important part.
I really don't think anyone's that bad that quality should be an issue. Visualization is an important part of conveying what a ship is; without it a page for a vessel is pretty much just a name with a bunch of generic information attached.

Regarding the more current topic, I really, really feel you guys are overcomplicating things. No one's going to pay attention to that stuff with the exception of some very specific circumstances.

Still, guess it makes more sense to overdo it than underdo it in regards to facts when submitting a ship; I just fear some might not take filling in those values as seriously as you think they will.

Urghghaer my computer shut off in the middle of writing stuff. I'm going to take a nap and make a new thread with the sheets relevant to factions (which I had typed, of course I didn't save it) later tonight.

Your speed would always be relative to light. I used velocity first because it would mean more to people and is easier to work with, inertial dampening whoosits. Acceleration makes more sense, but cruising speed and combat speed aren't necessary. Atmospheric speed will work.

Let's say a picture doesn't have to be immediately provided with the information as long as it's provided at some point in the future.

I think I've covered everything that's been discussed.

Alright. I have no complaints save for the Infobox situation, which my post on mysteriously disappeared for some reason :o

But yeah, looking good. You really deserve a pat on the back for how much work you're putting into this.

Ivan seems to think his job is to convert your forms wholesale to infoboxes. Maybe you do too, I don't know. But I condemn the notion as saturating the infoboxes with borderline meaningless content defeats the purpose of having them in the first place...in an ideal world the templates would lift only the really important stuff from these applications.

I've been thinking about that, actually. Some of the fields are meant to have more information than others. For instance, those of the race sheet can't be fully answered without a lengthy text. The infoboxes for these would be brief, like the infobox on the "Human" wikipedia page, and the filled form would contribute more to the body of the lexicon page. The template for ship infoboxes would be longer and include more.

Oh, and corporations might become an issue at some point. I don't really want to address it right now, but we might have to sooner or later.

E: But it's nice to have plenty of templates, I suppose, even if some don't get used.

I would like to petition cats to add the following parameters to the ship's info sheets:

Sheilds:
-Strength, in joules, or a variant of joules
-Regeneration, in Watts, or a variation of Watts

Armour:
-Material 1's thickness
-Material 2's thickness
-etc

Those should be put under "Defenses." I can add an armor sub, I guess, but the armor thickness (and strength) would vary too much to get a measurement like that. And a shield one, too, even though most people just use shields as a lazy way to be able to say "my ship better thn urs hur hur hur" without even trying to ever explain the mechanism behind it. And very few viable kinds of shield systems would generate an actual, unvarying, solid wall that could be assigned a single measurement in joules.

It's also come to my attention that the Economy and Military on the timeline don't have any means of measurement.

isn't the whole point of this to stop people from leaving important information out?
